Arrived back at Wine Tree Farm on Saturday 22nd, after 2 weeks teaching wine blending classes on the high seas.
I departed for Miami on October 7’th. As you may recall hurricane Matthew was just passing off-shore east of Miami and heading towards northern Florida and the Carolina’s. Fortunately Miami only experienced heavy rainfalls and no damage. Life in Miami was back to normal serveral hours before I landed.
By Saturday the weather had cleared up and I was on my way to the MSC Divina, which was just returning from dry dock. On my way to the ship I almost had a heart attack when I discovered that I had left my Passport at home. Without a Passport I would not be able to board the ship as it would be traveling to international destinations and immigration officials would not allow anyone to board without a Passport.
After years of international travel I had never forgotten my Passport, so this was a gut wrenching shock. Fortunately my son Nic was able to Fedex me my Passport on Monday for arrival the next day on Tuesday. This would have allowed me to fly to St Maarten, to join the cruise in the port of Philipsburg on Tuesday. Unfortunately there were no flights to St Maarten that day.
Thus I had to wait until Wednesday to fly to San Juan in Puerto Rico.
Now, there was a minor problem called the Jones Act. The Jones Act does not allow someone to board a foreign ship on US territory and get off on US territory without the ship having first docked at a foreign port. Crazy?! Tell me about it. But look up the “Jones Act” if you’re interested.
The problem was that if I boarded the ship in San Juan, which is in Puerto Rico, a US territory, then I would not be able to get off in Miami. Fortunately I was continuing on the cruise the following week, during which we would dock at a foreign port. Thus I was able to get on in San Juan. Murphy was my escort on this trip.
I had two very busy weeks at sea and suprisingly met passengers from Nevada and Sacramento, which is a first time ever.
We got back to Miami Saturday morning Oct 22. I then had to high tail it to Miami airport for a long flight back to Sacramento, to staff the Wine Tree Farm Winery which was managed by my son, Nic, during my absence.
Next weekend Oct 29, will be the Fall Wine Club Release party. So I look forward to seeing you there to share some fabulous wine and details of my adventures.
